Title: Using technology to support student learning in mathematics

Trevor Bailey (CEMPS) with Katie Haines and Becci Craddock-Taylor

Students have been working on an assessed project to look at ways in which technology can be used to enhance the learning and teaching of mathematics, tutorials and self-learning. A variety of technologies that have been trialled and evaluated will be discussed including podcasts, electronic voting systems and a screen capturing software called "Captivate". There will also be reflection on the skills and experiences that students can gain from undertaking this kind of activity.

Title: What do students want from learning technologies, and who benefits?

Jenny Wren (Business School) with Tim Lowe, John Lonn, Henry Morris and Ryan Thompson

This session will focus in particular, on student perceptions of four technologies within the Business School to support academic learning and teaching: lecture capture, audience response clickers, Flipcam video and podcasts. Research on the use of these technologies will be presented along with discussion of their implementation and the extent to which technology can benefit students in achieving a high quality learning experience.

Title: Essay Writing support in Biosciences

Nicky King (CLES) with Kirsty Clemow and Tom Clarke

Students in Biosciences reviewed support and preparation for writing essays in examinations at Level 2 and how this could be improved. The result was a booklet produced by students for students which has been used not only in Biosciences but elsewhere in the University and HE community. This session will look at how students worked with academics to support their studies, how the booklet has and can be used, and what we learnt from the process that will help us continue to work effectively with students.

Title: Be the change: Making a sustainable difference in the local and global community

Jackie Bagnall (Business School) with Hannah Metcalfe, Vashisht Bhatt, Helena Sandesjo, Rachel Sene and Laura Parkes

This session outlines the formation of a student group which seeks to build a student society who are committed to action on sustainable issues, the Be the Change society started locally and its reach is now global. Find out more about how students find the energy and connections to make change happen, what projects currently exist and help us shape the future.

Title: Taking the Student Out of the Classroom: Community Engagement and the Curriculum - an example from Law

Sue Price (CSSIS) with Erika Borley, Natasha Bellinger and Michael Fallow 

This session explores the integration of pro bono, volunteering activities into the law curriculum, in particular the student-run Law Clinic and the Debt Literacy Project. Students will explain how these projects directly relate to their studies and also enhance their employability, whilst having a real benefit for the local community.

Title: Students at the heart of the system: a Student's Guild perspective

James Hutchinson and Hannah Maher (Students' Guild) with Alex Ratcliffe

This session explores student engagement in learning and teaching in the new HE environment, drawing on current practice in the Students’ Guild at the University of Exeter. The focus will be on looking to the future, and asking where we go next and how participants can support initiatives more fully to ensure that all students recognise opportunities for engagement.
