Student exchange in language programmes: the Erasmus scheme & Tandem Language Exchange

This workshop aims to raise awareness of the recently launched Tandem Language Exchange and will provide a brief overview and update of it's first year of running. TLE provides a 'one-stop shop' for students from across the University to find a language partner to practice with, as well as targeted social events. TLE is co-ordinated by a student intern in close collaboration with the Foreign Language Centre, and aims to promote intercultural understanding and greater integration of home and International students. The workshop is relevant to all staff who have contact with International students and your feedback, comments and suggestions about ways of promoting TLE is welcomed.

Overseas visits as a vehicle for internationalising the curriculum

How can all students, regardless of their programme of study, gain experience of working with people from different cultures? This workshop will highlight some of the opportunities available and prompt you to think about what you can offer your students in terms of international experiences, whether here in Exeter or by going abroad. We will discuss aspects of cultural diplomacy, culture shock and awareness and tolerance of other cultures and you will have the opportunity to discuss ideas in your group and to ask questions. This workshop is relevant to all staff who want to be able to offer their students something a bit different that will enhance their employability skills and broaden their experience.

English language skills: what should Exeter be asking for?

There is increasing evidence that international students whose first language is not English, and who have satisfied the University of Exeter’s English language requirements, are having serious academic problems due to language competence issues. This workshop will discuss why the current level of Exeter’s English language requirements may be a problem at all levels (from undergraduate to research postgraduate), and will compare Exeter’s requirements with those of our Top-10 peer competitors. The costs of raising language requirements will also be addressed. The workshop aims to conclude with the discussion of recommendations for University action.

Researcher development online:  supporting culturally diverse research students

The Effective Researcher Development Programme offers an extensive choice of training and development events exclusively designed for our doctoral students. Sessions range from project management to presenting conference papers, and preparing for the viva examination to writing up your thesis.  However, there is a recognition that an increasing number of students, for a wide variety of reasons, are not able to commit to campus based face-to-face workshops that the ERDP offers.  Therefore, to compliment the ERDP face-to face programme a collaborative project involving the Universities of Bath, Bristol and Exeter is developing 10 online learning modules under the banner of Researcher Development Online.  The workshop will explore the background to the RDO project and examine the role of academic staff in the development of modules. There will be the opportunity to have a “hands on” experience of the learning modules via a networked PC.
