Doctoral supervision
The role of academic staff as doctoral supervisors has undergone significant change in recent years, and is an increasingly important aspect of academic practice.
Support arrangements for doctoral supervisors will vary in different Schools, but colleagues newly involved in this area of responsibility are strongly recommended to attend a short training course, Doctoral Supervision: An Exploratory Workshop.
The University also provides a comprehensive handbook on doctoral supervision. Developed collaboratively with colleagues in the Academic Policy and Standards Unit, with input from experienced supervisors, the handbook includes sections on:
- the role of the supervisor and mentor
- managing supervision meetings
- ethical issues
- student appeals and complaints
- the Effective Researcher Development Programme and other developmental opportunities for PGR students
- developmental opportunities for supervisors
Visit the Supervisor Handbook site for full guidance.
