Interlibrary Loans at Exeter

If an item is not available at Exeter University Library, you can request an Interlibrary Loan.  You can link to the online request service here.

The Library will make the request on your behalf and will borrow books and journals from other libraries in the United Kingdom and from abroad.

There is a PDF guide to using the service here: Document Delivery Guide

There is also guidance on when to order an Inter Library loan here:  Inter-library Loans guidance for Colleges

University of Exeter staff and students based in Exeter can use the online ordering system.  If you are based at Cornwall then please make a request via here.

Document supply charges are reviewed annually in June, in light of changes in British Library pricing.  The fee for an Inter-Library Loan request is currently £14.80 per item for members of the University of Exeter.   Payment can be made by purchasing pre-paid tokens or paying by card when making the request online.

Please be aware that Inter Library Loan material must be ordered and collected from the same campus and that it is not possible to send ILL material ordered at Exeter to Cornwall or material ordered in Cornwall to Exeter.

A wide variety of electronic and printed material can be obtained from the British Library and some printed materials can be borrowed from other Libraries within the UK and overseas, including:

Before you make a request

Make sure you have confirmed that the item you require is not available via the Electronic Library and is also not held by any of the University Libraries.

Please make sure you require the item before submitting your request, as all requests will be charged for unless the British Library is unable to supply the item.

Unless you are from the College of Humanities, make sure you have sufficient funds as payment is made with a pre-paid token or at the time of the request.

Articles and chapter requests are fulfilled electronically wherever possible. You will need a British Library username and password to access these files. Register for a free account here

During and after making a request

The Library will make the request on your behalf and will borrow books and journals from other libraries in the United Kingdom and from abroad (this may require the payment of an additional £29.60 or a further 2 tokens).

Please note - Interlibrary Loans must be collected from and returned to the Library where the request was made..

Some items borrowed from other libraries may be "Library Use Only" and cannot be consulted outside of the Library. Staff will inform you if this is applicable, when the item arrives at Exeter.

Books borrowed via the Interlibrary Loans Service must not be taken overseas.

Items must be returned to the Library Services Desk by the due date. Customers who fail to return Interlibrary Loans promptly will be fined at a daily rate per item.

You must always inform the Library at once if you lose an interlibrary loan. The British Library may charge in excess of £160 for a lost item.
