What Does Temporary Reserve (Ready Text) Mean ?
This is a special collection at each library which provides speedy access to texts which are in heavy demand. Because so many students need these texts, they are lent for very short periods. All items in the collection are included in the library catalogue and clearly marked as Temporary Reserve or Ready Text.
Our Ready text collection has benefitted from additional investment this year, boosting the number of “loan-able” and “reference only” core text material.
We have improved the loan periods, which are described in detail below.
Why are there two names ?
The collection for Forum Library books is called Ready Text. At all the other libraries it is known as Temporary Reserve.
Where are the collections ?
The Ready Text Collection is currently located in the Law Library but will be moving to the Express Collections in the Forum Library at the start of June 2012. There are also Temporary Reserve Collections in the Law Library (for Law books) and the St Luke's Campus Library.
How long can I borrow items for ?
Ready Text and Temporary Reserve items are issued for 24 hours.
Items can be borrowed over weekends, if available.
How many items can I borrow ?
You may borrow 4 Ready Text and 2 Temporary Reserve items at one time.
Can I book them in advance ?
You can book them in advance for a specific time. You can make bookings via the catalogue (OPAC) - you will need your IT Services email login/password. Please make a note of your bookings so that you can pick them up on the correct day and time. We will only hold booked items for an hour so collect your booked items promptly - if someone else asks for an item you have booked more than an hour after the start of your booking we will let them take it.
How do I book them on the catalogue (OPAC) ?
To book a TR/RT item so you can collect it at some point in the future, first locate the item's record on the computer catalogue in the normal way (e.g. through author/title/keyword/lecturer/subject search as appropriate).
Click on "Book a Temporary Reserve/Ready Text copy ". Log in as prompted (using University login/password, or card number/PIN)
Select the date and time when you want to collect the item (you have 1 hour from the booking time to collect this item, after that the booking is cancelled). Then click on the "SUBMIT" button.
If the item is not available for the full 24 hour period you will be told that the booking was unsuccessful. However, it may be possible to book the item for a shorter period, so please ask Issue Desk staff for assistance.
How do I cancel my booking ?
To check your bookings, or to cancel any bookings for items you no longer intend to collect at that time, go to the Library Catalogue screen and choose Your Library Record (n.b. If you know that you will not be collecting an item you have booked, please cancel the booking so that other people will not be prevented from borrowing the item).
Log in as prompted (using University login/password, or card number/PIN)
Click on the "X ITEMS BOOKED FOR FUTURE USE" to view and cancel your bookings. n.b. once you have cancelled a booking we cannot give you details of the book should you decide you still need it, so only cancel a booking if you are sure you no longer require the book at that particular time!
If I return it late are there fines ?
Fines are incurred for items that are returned late. Ready Text/Temporary Reserve fines have been lowered for a trial period to £1.00 for the first hour then 50 pence for each subsequent hour or part-hour.
Can I renew items from this collection ?
Items from these collections can be renewed, if no one else has booked them - if you request a renewal you must be prepared to return the item by the original due time if the renewal is not possible owing to another student's booking.
How do I borrow items from this collection ?
Ready Text and St. Luke's Campus Library
This collection is self-service, and is arranged by classmark. You should look for the classmark of the item you require on the online Library Catalogue, and then locate the item on the shelves. Take the item and your UniCard to one of the self-service machines within Ready Text and follow the on-screen instructions to borrow the item. If the self-service machine will not allow you to borrow the item owing to someone else's booking, please ask Library staff for assistance; it is likely that staff will still be able to let you borrow the item, although this may be for a shorter loan period than normal
Other Libraries
Temporary Reserve collections are held behind the Desk and administered by library staff. Please have the details of author, title, and classmark when you ask for a Temporary Reserve item. The Issue Desks are often busy and having the book's details allows library staff to provide a more speedy and efficient service. If you borrow something which someone else has booked within what would be the usual loan period YOU WILL HAVE THE ITEM FOR A SHORTER TIME - please look at the date label for the exact time for return.
Can I just return these items like I do normal loans ?
Ready Text
When Ready Text is open, you may return items from that collection at the self-service machines within the collection. When the Library is closed you may post returns through the Book Returns Letterbox. The Book Returns Letterbox for the Library on the St Luke's Campus is located in the entrance corridor.
Other Libraries
Please take Temporary Reserve items to the Desk staff. When the Library is closed, you may post returns through the Book Return Letterbox.
