Research Commons (Old Library)

The Old Library was refurbished to create a world-class research-orientated library facility. At the same time, the development has also delivered a quiet workspace and temporary storage for core collections during the implementation of the Forum project.   The design team for this project was Lacey Hickie & Caley.

The Research Commons opened its doors to all researchers and students seeking a quiet and uplifting place to study. If you knew the ‘old library’ before, you won’t believe the transformation.

A £2 million investment in the Old Library building has created a dramatic world-class research library space with a new reception, exhibition hall, café-style break out and terrace area.  There is a new special collections suite and a deep well of 10 kilometres of shelving for research collections.  A large, light new reading room, multi-media seminar space, and 56 new reader seats will provide library users with a quiet and inspiring space to study during the Forum works in the Main Library. The whole building is Wi-Fi enabled and PC desks in the Reading Room all have data access.

The space has been renamed the Research Commons in recognition of its transformation into a place that aims to support research at all levels, for quiet study or collaboration, with exhibition space for knowledge transfer, and home to the  University’s unique special collections and museum for film.
