Girls and Boys in Storyland

From 3 April until 31 May 2012 an exhibition of early children’s books will be on display in the Research Commons and at Exeter Central Library. Both the University and Central Library have exciting collections of early children’s books and the exhibition will showcase some of the highlights of each. From Margery Meanwell (aka Goody-Two Shoes) to Matt Merrythought (the boy who was always happy), the exhibition will give you a chance to see how boys and girls were depicted in rhymes, stories and illustrations from the nineteenth- and early-twentieth centuries.

For more information on the exhibitions, including features on authors and illustrators, sign up to follow the blog at http://girlsandboysinstoryland.wordpress.com/

New Records on the Archive Catalogue!

30 April 2010

The Marshall papers (EUL MS 31a) have now been catalogued onto the Archive Catalogue system.

John Marshall (1818-1891) was born in Ely and educated at University College London. He was admitted a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1849, and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1857. He was appointed Professor of Surgery at University College London in 1866, and wrote, among a number of other works, 'The Outlines of Human Physiology, Human and Comparative' (1867). This fascinating collection of letters was put together by his daughter, Ada Blanche Marshall, mainly from letters addressed to him from eminent Englishmen. Whilst some are merely autographs, scraps and acknowledgements the range includes letters from many of the major artists, sculptors and leading  lights of the period including Rosetti, Lord Leighton, Charles Dickens, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris, Alfred Waterterhouse, George Frederick Watts and Sir Edwin Landseer.  See the online archive catalogue for more information.
