The Move to 72
Currently the University of Exeter uses both ‘26’ and ‘72’ as prefixes for its telephone numbers. This presents a fragmented appearance to callers to the University, with non-contiguous ‘26’ number ranges allocated not only to the University but also to other organisations (including Exeter City Council).
A better solution will be to present a single, contiguous number range for the University’s phone extensions. This will presents a more professional and more easily understood numbering system. This proposed move also opens up the opportunity to designate ‘noteworthy’ numbers (e.g. 722722) for prominent teams or individuals.
Furthermore, moving away from the ‘26’ prefix range to solely a ‘72’ prefix brings cost savings to the University of about £28k per annum. These webpages explain a bit more about why we are making the change and what all staff can do to ensure a smooth switchover.
These changes will have no effect upon the St. Luke’s and Tremough campuses.
