Telephony

Voice over Internet Protocol, more commonly known as VoIP telephony, has been introduced to the University of Exeter as part of the Network Upgrade Project. Information is available seperately describing  telephony on the Cornwall campus .

Users with a Nortel handset are on the new VoIP phone system, which carries phone calls over the data network rather than seperate phone lines.  Benefits of this system include:

  • Free phone calls between VoIP phones
  • The ability to 'log-in' and out of handsets, providing:
    • Increased security - no-one can make calls from your line when you are logged out
    • Flexibility - VoIP users can 'log-in' to VoIP phones anywhere, allowing hot-desking
    • Sustainability - The ability to centrally power down these phones overnight provides security and reduces and environmental impact
  • Advanced user functionality

A number of documents describing how to useĀ Nortel VoIP service are available.
