Connected DataProtector (‘CDP’) is an automated system that takes a copy of all data on your PC and saves it to a central backup server.
CDP is available for University-owned PCs only. The software runs automatically in a time period of your choice, with a maximum frequency of once per day. When installed CDP copies all files on your PC (including all the program and system files), but subsequently only copies those files that have changed since the previous backup. This means that the backup process will usually take only a few minutes and won’t interrupt your other work.
Individual files and folders can then be restored easily from the backup copy. Alternatively a complete PC can be restored to working order by returning to the ‘last known good’ backup. CDP restores directly from the networked backup copy, making this a simpler and smoother operation than previously. CDP also has significant advantages in the way it identifies individual PCs, making it quicker and easier to transfer the backup service from one PC to another.
Connected DataProtector is covered by the University’s Connected DataProtector site licence.
For budgetary reasons installation is only available for staff based in Academic Schools – staff in Professional Services will automatically be redirected to install NetBackup Professional instead.
The licence does not allow staff or students to install Connected DataProtector on a privately-owned PC.
Connected DataProtector version 7.5.2 is available:
- for installation by downloading from the Academic Services web site
